Year 1 w/b 22nd April 2024

Date: 26th Apr 2024 @ 5:07pm

It is lovely to see the sun shining and what a busy and exciting week the children have had. Mr Young has started in Year One and has enjoyed getting to know the children this week.

On Monday the children had a very exciting RE lesson conducting our very own Baptism service in class. The children came dressed very smartly as the congregation and got into role as we baptised ‘Oliver James’ with Mrs Pulle leading the service. We looked at pictures of Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Walkers children’s christening services and looked at special christening props such as the candle, the shell and special gifts that you may receive after a baptism. It really helped the children understand what a baptism entails and what it signifies. In collective worship the children have been thinking about the key questions of ‘what makes us flourish?’ and ‘who helps us flourish best?’

This week in maths we have been focusing on Multiplication and Division and exploring equal groups and what this means. The children have been using what they already know about counting in 2s, 5s, 10s to help them. The children have also been making arrays and writing the number sentence to match.

In English this week the children have continued focusing on the story ‘Black Rock’ and learning the text map to really understand the story with actions. The actions have really helped the children learn key language, characters and the plotline. The children have been using conjunctions such as ‘and’, ‘because’ and ‘but’ to make a sentence more exciting. We have also planned our own imitation return stories with new characters and rock. We will begin writing our stories next week.

In phonics we continue to review phonics sounds. The focus sounds this week have been ure (sure it’s pure) or (shut the door) aw (yawn at dawn) and au (Paul the astronaught).

In History the children have continued exploring Florence Nightingale. They have thoroughly enjoyed learning ‘the lady in the lamp’ song as well as focusing on what the hospital conditions were like in Scutari before Florence arrived and what they were like after and what impact she has had on hospitals and their conditions now.

In Science we have added to our options for grouping animals. This week we looked at grouping into vertebrates and invertebrates. We went on a hunt around school and found many invertebrates hiding in our school garden.

In D&T we visited our local park to observe, sketch and talk about the designs of the equipment available. We looked at how the equipment had been constructed including the materials each of the items are made from and the strong shapes we could see in the designs. We then returned to school and conducted a survey to find out which item of playground equipment is the most popular in Year One.

On Wednesday we had a lovely farewell service for Mrs Pulle at St Oswald’s. It was such a treat to come together as our whole school in church. There was singing, art, thoughtful words and even a spot of cheerleading from Year Two!

The Year One team wish you a fantastic weekend and hopefully the sun will be shining!
