Year 1 w/b 21st October 2024
Date: 24th Oct 2024 @ 4:09pm
We have had a wonderful final week of learning in Year One!
In English this week, we have finished off our instruction text. What brilliant writers we have in Year One! Later in the week, we read Miss Roxburgh’s instructions and noticed lots of mistakes! We all put our detective hats on and corrected these instructions, making sure that there were capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
Phonics this week has been either ar (start the car), or (shut the door) or i-e (nice smile) and igh (fly high). We have also been practicing speedy reading of our common exception words (red words) to help when reading our books.
In maths this week, we have been focusing on the following:
- Moving on from number bonds within 10 to number bonds to 10.
- Bringing two or more parts together to create a whole. To help us, we used ten frames and counters.
- Increasing one quantity by a given amount, while continuing to work within 10. We used a number line to help us.
In Collective worship, we have focused on pumpkins of love, light and hope in preparation for today’s finale. We have been amazed by all the effort and creativity that have produced such wonderful carved pumpkins reflecting these words.
We enjoyed our final gymnastic lesson on Wednesday. In this lesson, we recapped shapes and balances before learning how to perform a bunny hop with hands first then feet. Our confidence grew quickly and by the end of the lesson we could all perform bunny hops and add them into a sequence with our group. We had to remember to move with control, just like a gymnast!
In art this week, we finished our polyblock prints which were influenced by the work of William Morris. We carefully drew leaves onto our polyblocks, rolled ink on top and printed it onto the backgrounds that we made last week.
We want to say a big thank you to Mr Jepson who came in to be our mystery reader on Friday afternoon! We really enjoyed listening to ‘The Squirrels who Squabbled’.
Well done Year One for showing so much enthusiasm this half term! I hope you all have a restful break and I look forward to welcoming you back after the holidays and hearing all about the exciting things that you have been up to.
