Year 1 w/b 21st March
Date: 24th Mar 2022 @ 4:15pm
It was lovely to see many of you in Church today and what a delight it was to be back in Church together having walked down in the sunshine. We were so pleased to see the children’s confidence and enthusiasm in the way they wished to read prayers and talk about their Mums. As Sandi said, the singing was wonderful and several of us had a tear in our eye as the chorus of ‘My Lighthouse’ resounded around the Church filling the quiet and the candles lit for Ukraine shone out to spread their light.
This week in English we have been writing our own information texts about either giraffes or elephants. After carefully looking at the features of an information texts and learning a text about tigers last, week we were able to plan our own text maps using the information we had gathered from the facts about these two animals. We then began writing, ensuring we applied as many Year One writing features as we could. We also tried to apply features such as ‘the power of three’ when giving extra information in our sentences. An example from one information text was: Giraffes eat leaves, plants and grass but don’t eat meat. It was great to see the children taking such care in their writing to use and apply the given features whilst also going back to check their work carefully.
In phonics we focused on all the oa family. Goat in a boat oa, blow the snow ow and phone home o-e.
In Maths this week we have completed our unit on ‘numbers within 50’ and will now move on to looking at measure including length. To finish the unit, we had to apply our maths knowledge to compare groups of farm animals by finding ‘how many more’ (difference between) or ‘how many in total’ there were in given pictures.
In History we continued to compare a Victorian kitchen and modern kitchen. We had to use the information we had been given to decide which would be an easier kitchen to work in and explain why we came to our conclusions. We all thought modern kitchens would be much less hard work because of the addition of electricity. Washing clothes alone sounded like a lot of hard work in Victorian times using the washboard and mangle!
Our focus in Lent has been Jesus the Way maker and in Collective worship this week we explored what it means to be bold. Jesus was courageous and bold as he avoided the temptations whilst in the wilderness. We thought about the things that tempt us and the advice we both give and receive that help us stay strong and make the right choices. Year One had lots of great advice.
On Tuesday, we welcomed Open the Book who shared the Easter story with us through drama. They focused on the events from Palm Sunday through to the last supper, Jesus’ arrest and trial, his crucifixion and ultimate resurrection on Easter Sunday morning. Open the Book have organised an Easter trail around Sandbach for families on Saturday 2nd April. This is a free event, and more details can be found on the poster outside school and on the flyer to be distributed in book bags next week.
In RE we have designed our own crosses with images that reflect what Easter means to each one of us. Many children have chosen Jesus at the centre of their cross with pictures showing the events of Holy week. We hope to use these designs to make Easter cards next week.
We have put our newfound colour mixing skills to good use to create observational paintings of flowers. The class recalled how the three primary colours can be mixed to produce secondary colours and from here all colours can be made. We were especially pleased with the shades of green mixed for the stems and leaves. These paintings have now been made into Mothering Sunday cards which we hope you will enjoy receiving at the weekend.
In addition to our visit from Open the Book, our Mothering Sunday service, and our Key Stage One trip to church we also had a visit from Scientific Sarah a scientist from Mad Science. She came to present an assembly to the whole school to encourage us to sign up for a new after school club that is starting after Easter. The assembly took us through ‘A Journey to Mars’ where we had to investigate ways of transporting a rocket from Earth to the planet Mars. We started with balloon power and ended with real rocket fuel! It was great fun to see the different scientific reactions and the enthusiasm from all the children.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend in the sunshine,
Take care
Mrs Pulle, Mrs Lindersen and the Year One team
