Year 1 w/b 20th January 2025

Date: 24th Jan 2025 @ 1:13pm

We have enjoyed another week of learning in Year One!

In English this week, we have planned and written our octopus opening of our detective narratives based off the story Hermelin by Mini Grey. There have been lots of creative characters including detective rabbits, tortoises, unicorns and kittens to name a few. Next week, we will continue to plan and write up our other sections of our narrative. We already have some fantastic results!

In phonics, we have been working on ai (snail in the rain) and oa (goat in a boat) and please see the videos sent on dojo to reinforce this teaching.

We have come to the end of our place value unit in maths. We have focused on the following:

  • Comparing pairs of numbers up to and including 20. Children have used their knowledge of representing numbers using objects to help them identify which number in a pair is greater or less than the other.
  • Ordering sets of three numbers. For example, ordering 8, 17 and 14 from smallest to greatest or greatest to smallest.

In geography, we looked at compass points and used these to move around a farm using the key to find out which part of the farm we had travelled to. It was tricky work, but we were all excellent at using the key to locate where we had ended up.

Our science learning continued to focus on materials this week. We worked collaboratively to identify, name and classify a variety of materials.

In computing, we learned that algorithms are step-by-step instructions to solve a problem or complete a task. We then created clear instructions on how to cross the road, brush our teeth and make a smoothie.

In our DT lesson this week, we voted for our favourite fruit and vegetables for our smoothies that we will be making next week and created three tasty smoothie options. We are so excited to make and try our smoothies!

We are looking forward to our Detective Day on Tuesday 4th February. Children can wear non-uniform and dress as a detective. We shall be investigating mechanisms for making moving cards as part of our Design Technology unit.

I hope you have a great weekend.
