Year 1 w/b 18th November 2024
Date: 22nd Nov 2024 @ 3:42pm
Well done Year One on another wonderful week!
In English, we recapped the interesting vocabulary that we looked at last week from our model text Dexter and the trolls and used this to write our own sentences. Later in the week, we worked as a team to spot the structural and language features in our model text. This included the title, spoken words, story language, paragraphs, noun phrases to describe the setting and repeated phrases.
In phonics this week, we have focused on ea (cup of tea) and oi (spoil the boy).
In maths this week, we have come to the end of our addition and subtraction unit. We have looked at subtraction on a number line and focused on adding 1 or 2 in a variety of different contexts. We recognised that adding 2 is the same as adding 1 twice and similarly subtracting 2 is the same as subtracting 1 twice. This helps us to be secure in our understanding on the composition of 2. Later in the week, we started our shape unit. We looked at a variety of 3D shapes (cubes, cuboids, cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres) and worked as a team to try to name them.
In computing this week, we continued to explore the online drawing program Sketchpad. We looked at the different drawing tools, adding shapes, adding clipart and changing the background of our pictures before using these skills to produce work in the style of Kandinsky. Sketchpad is an online drawing program that you can access for free at home. It would be lovely so see some art work that have been created at home!
In RE this week, we focused on three stories from the New Testament- Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, Jesus Heals a Paralysed Man and The Good Samaritan. These stories helped us to understand what life was like for Jesus over 2,000 years ago.
This week in DT, we continued to work on creating our hand mits/comforters for Rapunzel. We were very excited to cut out our design and pin these to our chosen fabric.
In science, we focused on height and thought about who was the tallest and who was the smallest in our class. After being measured, we all got into height order with the tallest being at one side and the smallest being on the other.
We will be walking down to St Oswald’s Church on Thursday 28th November with Year Two and Year Three. It would be great if you are able to join us at church at 10:30am. We look forward to seeing you there if you are able to make it!
I hope you have a great weekend.
