Year 1 w/b 17th March 2025

Date: 21st Mar 2025 @ 11:45am

We have had another wonderful week of learning in Year One!

In English this week, we have finished writing our portal narratives and wow… they are fantastic! Towards the end of our week, we looked at the interesting vocabulary in our information text all about ‘Sharp Teeth Sid’ and used these words and phrases in our own sentences.

In phonics we focused on ue ‘Come to the rescue!’ and e ‘she and he’. Next week we will have taught all the sounds required by the end of Year one and we shall focus on revising /revisiting taught sounds and reading them in real and nonsense words.

In maths this week, we have learned how to count objects more efficiently by grouping into tens and ones. It is important that children recognise that a 2-digit number is formed by counting the number of groups of ten for the first digit and the ones left over as the second digit. Later in the week, we used a part-whole model to partition a number into tens and ones.

In PE this week, we focused on rolling the ball to a partner. We especially enjoyed playing dodgeball for the first time this year!

In art, we drew and painted our own ‘Wild Things’ and added these to our jungle background. We were blown away by how much the children could remember about our artist Henri Rouseau!

In RE, we looked at the life cycle of a butterfly and thought about how this links to Holy Week. We soon noticed that the chrysalis represents Jesus’ crucifixion and the beautiful butterfly represents Jesus’ resurrection.

In science, we continued learning all about animals. In this lesson we started to look at grouping and classifying animals into the following categories: fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds.

On Friday, it was World Down Syndrome Day and to celebrate this we took part in the ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign where we wore mismatched or bold and colourful socks. We also enjoyed looking at how much our sunflowers had grown since we planted them two weeks ago. We were delighted to see that all of our sunflowers are growing and blooming uniquely, just like every child.

As you may have seen on our newsletter, Reception, Y1 and Y2 will be visiting St Oswald's at 9:30 on Thursday 27th March for a Mothering Sunday Service. We will be leaving to walk down to church at 9 and you are welcome to join us. We look forward to seeing you there!

I hope you all have a great weekend.
