Year 1 w/b 17th June 2024
Date: 21st Jun 2024 @ 4:39pm
Year One have had an amazing Sports Week at school. It has been great to get outside and get active, working together as a team. We have also been busy in the classroom in all areas of the curriculum.
In English the children have been focusing on sentences and remembering that a sentence needs a capital letter and a full stop. The children had some sentences all about pirates that were muddled up and they had to order them correctly. They then had a pirate scene and had to write sentences about what they could see from the picture. Then at the end of the week the children have written their own letters from the Night Pirates to Tom.
In maths we have been continuing our work with time and looking at days of the week and months of the year. Please practice this at home thinking about the ordering and sequencing of the days in the week and the months of the year. For example “what day do we go to Rainbows?” “What day comes before Friday?”, "What month is your birthday?". All this language and terminology is great to help cement their learning. We have also begun to look at reading the time on analogue clocks. This week we looked at o’clock, next week we will focus on half past. Talking about and telling the time at home is always helpful when reinforcing these concepts.
In collective worship this week, we have been recapping and revisiting the story from last week about the glue used to mend the broken pot. This glue represents God and how he holds us together. We explored the “ow” and “wow” moments of life and what these may look like in our daily lives.
In phonics the children have been looking at the key suffixes we use in Year One. This week these included: -er, -est, and -ed.
In RE this week the children have explored part 2 of the story of Joseph from the Old Testament looking at Joseph the Prisoner. The children had lots of wonder questions to answer in their RE portfolios. We also watched a clip and read the bible. We cannot wait to carry on our drama pieces as the weeks go on.
The children have been super active this week as it’s been Sports Week. The children have had the PE coach in from Cheshire Cricket focusing overarm throwing pretending they were Robin Hood with their arm to aim (like the bow). They’ve also been practising their batting skills and hitting the ball. And then on Tuesday we loved having a sports morning with Reception and Year 2 completing athletics, rounders, tennis and football activities. It was great to see the children getting active and working effectively as a team with other pupils.
In Science this week we have been observing our sunflower plant that we have been growing in class. It has been great to understand exactly what plants need to keep them alive such as sun, soil, water and carbon dioxide from the air to help them grow and flourish in the right conditions and environment. The children have been fantastic at remembering to water our class plant and keeping it in a nice sunny spot in class. We can’t wait to see it grow and develop as the weeks go by.
In Geography we have been identifying and locating the British seas using a compass to describe their location in relation to countries in the United Kingdom.
In Music we have built on our musical knowledge from last week and have added the term ‘composition’ to our musical vocabulary. This means the structure of a musical piece or the process of creating a piece of music. We created our own space themed music to a picture stimulus. Next week we will add these pieces together to create our own compositions.
Well done Year One for another busy week of learning.
Have a great weekend relaxing and enjoying family time.
From the Year One team.
