Year 1 w/b 15th April 2024
Date: 19th Apr 2024 @ 3:42pm
Welcome back to the summer term and how lovely it has been to have lighter mornings and evenings - let us hope warmer days are on the way too! This term we are delighted to have Mrs. Walker joining our Year 1 team and she has had a lovely week getting to know all the children and the routines of a Year 1 Brereton day.
Finding seaside objects such as boats, shells, lighthouses, fish, and a harbour scene. in our class gave us a great clue about our new text, ‘The Secret of Black Rock’ by Joe Todd- Stanton. We explored synonyms for new vocabulary and focused on the prefix un and how it changes a word to make it the opposite meaning eg- happy-unhappy, pack-unpack, tie-untie. We learned our new model text with actions and focused especially on the direct speech in sentences spoken by the fishermen and women.
All phonics sounds for Year One have now been taught so this term we are revising and reviewing taught sounds. This week we have focused on air/are, ear and ir/ur. This half term, to replace our look, write and check spelling homework we will be sending home real and nonsense words for your children to practice reading. This will be good practice for the phonics screening assessment starting the week commencing 10th June. Children will read some words on sight but for others please encourage them to recognise ‘Special friends, Fred talk and say the word’. This is the language we use in school so to reinforce it at home will be useful. Please revisit words/ special friends your child finds tricky throughout the week.
Maths learning has focused on counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 in order that children can see the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication eg recognising 5 lots of 10, 10+10+10+10+10= 5 x10. They will use their knowledge of skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and will use concrete, pictorial and abstract representations to help them to find the total of multiple equal groups and of doubles. We have also looked at equal groups of numbers.
Collective Worship this half term reflects the CDAT vision to enjoy ‘Life in all its fullness’ with a clear focus on how we can flourish. Year 1 agreed that love and kindness was at the heart of all their flourishing but also believed eating the right foods, sleeping, and having friends were also very important. Our PSHE focus ‘Being the best we can be’ links well with flourishing. This week we explored ‘Eating a rainbow’ and the 5 food groups that do different jobs for our body.
In RE we looked at objects related to Baptism in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. We heard the story of Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist in the river Jordan and looked at paintings of this event offering our opinion about why the painter painted a dove above Christ's head, why light was shining from the clouds and why there were angels in some of the paintings. History focused on real life heroes, and we explored the early life of Florence Nightingale and why she travelled to Scutari and what condition that hospital was in on her arrival. Indoor athletics involved the children working at 5 different stations to practise their long jumps, standing jumps, skipping, speed bounces and chest passes. ‘
In Science we have been classifying animals based on what they eat. We therefore now know what a herbivore, omnivore and carnivore is and animals that can be grouped into one of these groups.
Today marks Mrs Wiggs’ final day with us as she moves to pastures new. We are sure you will wish to join us in thanking Mrs Wiggs for her dedication and commitment to Year 1. She will certainly be missed and the children’s messages in her card were just lovely and showed how much she is appreciated. We hope she will stay in touch but wish her every happiness and joy in her future career.
Enjoy a great weekend and we shall look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.
Mrs Pulle, Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Walker.
