Year 1 w/b 14th October 2024
Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 3:59pm
Year One have enjoyed another week of the autumn term!
In English this week we have written our own innovations based on our instructions of ‘How to trap a toy soldier’. We were blown away by the creative ideas that the children had on how to trap their toys. We have been focusing on letter formation this week and wow… their handwriting has been wonderful!
We have been assessing the children’s reading progress this week and are pleased by the increase in the number of sounds the children can recall on sight and read in words. When a word is phonetically plausible, we encourage the children to identify the special friends (2/ 3 letters that make one sound), Fred the word, reading all the sounds in it e.g., b-l-ow and then read the word (blending the sounds). The red tricky words are looked at regularly so the children can read these on sight speedily. In this way the fluency and pace of reading is increased.
Due to our super three sessions about the ‘Art of Brilliance’ with Will Hussey, in phonics this week we have focused on the one sound, either ar (start the car), or e-e (go Pete and Steve!). We have also been practicing speedy reading of our common exception words (red words) to help when reading our books.
In maths this week, we have continued with our addition and subtraction unit. We have been focusing on the following:
- Learning that the addition symbol (+) can be used to represent combining two or more parts and the equals symbol (=) can be used to show equivalence between the whole and the sum of the parts.
- Writing number sentences by looking at addition fact families. Children have recognised that the order of an addition sentence can be varied. For example, 3+2=5, 2+3=5, 5=2+3 and 5=3+2.
- Combining our knowledge of the part-whole model and addition facts to explore number bonds within 10.
- Systematically identifying all of the number bonds within 10.
This week, we were very lucky to have a special visitor, Will Hussey, who came for three sessions all about the ‘Art of Brilliance’. We learnt about how we can have a positive mind set and that our actions can not only cheer others up, but ourselves too. The children were very excited to give Mrs Griffiths some chocolates as they wanted to thank her for all that she does for us. Seeing Mrs Griffiths so happy and grateful to receive her gift made us all smile.
We have come to the end of our history unit ‘The History of Transport’ and our science unit ‘Plants and Seasonal Change’ and have completed an end of unit quiz. We were so impressed by how much the children had remembered since the start of the autumn term!
In RE this week, we revisited the festival of Sukkot and in Forest School, we used our teamwork skills to build more Sukkah shelters. We had so much fun together!
Our art session this week built on our knowledge of William Morris and his artwork. We have started to put together our final piece of artwork, starting with the background. This week, we created a polyblock print in a style influenced by the work of William Morris. Next week, we will carefully draw our leaves and print them onto our backgrounds.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
