Year 1 w/b 12th October
Date: 16th Oct 2020 @ 4:22pm
We hope you enjoyed watching our video with instructions about how to trap a troll. This week in English we have innovated our text maps having had an email from Spell Publishing requesting we make new instructions to trap our villains . The class has really enjoyed making their own instructions and have a really good grasp about how to structure instructions and uses of conjunctions. The children have been so inspired they have been writing independently in their books and in their unguided time- amazing enthusiasm all round. Our phonic focus has been ar and oy so spelling homework will reflect this on Monday.
Our work in Power Maths books has consolidated our grasp of one more or less than a given number. We have compared numbers sets and introduced fewer and more than. Next, we worked on greater than, less than and equal to using a very greedy crocodile to support our understanding. Please see a few of our photos showing this learning.
Topic activities have included scratching our background designs into polystyrene tiles ready for printing next week in the style of William Morris, learning about the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners- Lee and comparing our use of web browsers. In science and Forest School this week we have been looking at different ways to sort natural objects. We decided to sort our foraged finds based on criteria such as colour, texture and type of tree. In PE we listened to the words of a poem and tried to move and act it out before completing outdoor maths to apply our understanding of greater than, less than and equal to with some very snappy, greedy crocodiles!
In HeartSmart we had lots of fun recognising that what goes into our bodies also comes out. If we take in good things, good things will come out of us. If we fill ourselves with unkind words or wrong habits, whose may come out in our lives too. We created a class wormery to demonstrate this as worms eat soil and in turn produce even more healthy soil. We can’t wait to watch what happens!
In RE we have completed our final piece of work on God reflecting on what we have learned this half term about God the creator. Harvest has been our focus in Collective worship and we have explored the harvest of the grain, discovering the various foods that contain oats, wheat and barley. Thank you so very much for your generous donations to the local foodbank at Congleton which we shall deliver next week.
Next Thursday will be our Pumpkins Heroes day. Children are invited to bring their carved pumpkins to school. The images in the pumpkins should reflect God’s love for everyone in the world as this year’s focus is the ‘words and teaching of Jesus’. A separate letter is being sent out to everyone with more details. Happy pumpkin carving!
We are very much looking forward to catching up with you all over the phone next Tuesday or Thursday and Thursday of course marks the end of this half term as we have an INSET day on Friday 23rd October.
With many thanks
Mrs Pulle and Mrs Lindersen
