Year 1 w/b 12th June 2023
Date: 16th Jun 2023 @ 5:08pm
What a delightful second week we have had in our final half term together in Year 1.
Our first news of the week must focus on the Phonics screening assessments we have carried out this week. It was wonderful to observe the children’s sheer confidence and delight as they read the 40 words in the assessment, calmly identifying special friends and reading the words whether real or nonsense using accurate phonics. Very well done Year One!
In English this week we have worked hard to learn our model text letter that Tom had written to the Night Pirates. We worked hard to add actions to the text map to help embed the sequence of events. Learning this text has supported our understanding of the features of letters and the punctuation and writing features used in the letter. Next week we will apply the skills we have learnt and observed to write our own Night Pirate letters as if we were aboard the ship.
In Maths this week, we have been looking at numbers to 100. We have looked for patterns in the 100 number square to help us find the missing numbers as well as looking at number tracks to focus on one row of numbers. We practiced counting to 100 in 10’s and have also looked at partitioning to tens and ones, where we used our skills of counting in 10’s to find our total amount tens and adding on our extra ones. Year One have worked really hard at numbers this week, and have done fantastically in our lessons. The children loved the game ‘number splat’ to practice finding those missing numbers!
In My Happy Mind we have been exploring feelings and learning about the different types of feelings. We looked at how these feelings might impact our behaviour and also talked about the types of things that make us happy, etc.
In Geography, we continued our learning about Oceans and Seas. We reminded ourselves of the oceans and continents that we looked at last week and then looked at the coast line of Britain. We studied photos of a variety of beaches and identified the physical and human features in each place.
During our Forest School session we continued to build boats and tested to see if they would float or sink. We also thought about what we know about pirates to create our own clay pirates on trees.
In RE our focus for the half term is Judaism and particularly the life of Joseph and his relationship with God. We have looked at the features of a synagogue and compared this to the inside of a Church . It was interesting to find the similarities such as a reading desk( bimah) and lectern, Rabbi and Vicar/ priest, Torah scroll and Bible as well as some differences. We then handled a range of Jewish artefacts – we looked inside a Torah scroll written in Hebrew, we identified a tallit ( prayer shawl) and kippah as well as mezuzahs containing the Shema prayer which would be fixed on doorframes of Jewish believers at their homes and Synagogues. Finally, we learned about the Passover recapping the story of Moses and how he helped Jewish people in slavery find freedom in the promised land.
In PE this half term we are working on athletic activities- throwing , running and jumping. This week we were introduced to javelin, shuttle runs, speed bouncing and throwing accuracy skills . This preparation will lead nicely into sports day at the end of term and Sports week next week. Each lunchtime /playtime next week we hope to introduce and play a different sport with children, such as French cricket, rounders and netball. Can we suggest children wear PE kit to school every day next week so they are sport ready. We shall also host a sports morning for KS1 and EYFS on Wednesday, please see the email with further details
With many thanks
