Year 1 w/b 11th November 2024
Date: 15th Nov 2024 @ 4:20pm
It has been an exciting week of learning in Year One!
In English this week, we thought of adjectives to describe ‘good’ characters and ‘bad’ characters and linked this with characters from others books that we have read in the past. We then enjoyed reading our model text ‘Dexter and the trolls’, focusing on some interesting vocabulary and phrases for example, chuckle, feast and once and for all, and answered questions about the text.
In phonics we have enjoyed focusing on ou (shout it out) and oy (toy for a boy). We have added the suffixes (ed and ing) to our spellings where appropriate.
In maths this week, we have focused on the following:
- Building knowledge of addition fact families to find all eight facts within a fact family. An example of a fact family is.
3+5=8
5+3=8
8-5=3
8-3=5
8=3+5
8=5+3
3=8-5
5=8-3
- Introducing children to the structure of subtraction that is “taking away”.
- Recording our findings in a number sentence. We used ‘first’, ‘then’ and ‘now’ stories to help us relate the question to the number sentence. For example, for the story “First there were 5 birds in a tree. Then 2 of the birds blew away. Now there are 3 birds in the tree.”, the related subtraction sentence is 5-2=3.
Our focus in PSHE and worship this week has been on anti-bullying. In our class we gathered ideas about how we would recognise bullying and what we would do if we saw or heard bullying in our school. We then focused on how we can show respect to others and agreed that there should be no outsiders at Brereton.
We have continued our geography sessions thinking about our environment, particularly looking for things which are manmade or natural. We extended our learning further this week by using these features to give directions between them. We worked in partners to carefully give clear instructions using the words ‘forwards, backwards, left and right’ to direct each other around our environment. We then used our directions to follow a map of our environment and drew the route we had taken on to the map. The children demonstrated some excellent listening and map reading skills and all successfully navigated their way back to the classroom.
We have continued our learning about Living things (including Humans) in science and used mirrors to look closely at our faces and have named all the features we can see. We then thought carefully about what is similar between different people and what differences we can see.
We really enjoyed our second lesson on computing, where we have been exploring the online programme ‘Sketchpad’ whilst improving our mouse control. We were very impressed by the way the children were able to use a mouse to control the computer and create their own pictures. The children have learnt about a range of tools that they could use and explored the effects each one made.
On Remembrance Day (Monday), Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 gathered at the flagpole. We talked about why we have a silence, the children shared prayers, and some children talked about family members who are serving, or have served, in our armed forces. We then observed a two-minute silence. The children stood beautifully and were very respectful.
Our KS1 nativity this year is called ‘Busy, Busy Bethlehem’ and your child will have come home this evening with a letter, detailing their part and suggested costume ideas. We do have some spare nativity costumes in school, so please just ask if we can assist with costumes and we shall endeavour to help. Our nativity will be performed on Wednesday 11th December at 5:30pm and Thursday 12th at 2pm. Our practises will start next week when we will focus on learning the actions to all 7 songs- it is certainly very exciting.
Thank you so much to Mrs Verwey for being our mystery reader this week! The children loved listening to your stories.
We are very excited to welcome Miss Rais into Year One as a student teacher and look forward to having her in our class until the end of the February.
I hope you all have a great weekend.
Miss Roxburgh
