Year 1 w/b 10th March 2025

Date: 13th Mar 2025 @ 4:30pm

We have enjoyed another week of learning in Year One.

In English this week, we have started to plan and write our own portal narratives. We have focused on adding adjectives to describe the character and location and the suffixes -er and -est to our writing. The children have made a great start and I look forward to reading them all once they are finished.

In phonics we have focused on the sounds ph (take a photo) and au (Paul the astronaut).

We have started our place value (within 50) unit in maths this week. We have been focusing on counting forwards and backwards between 20 and 50 and developing our understanding of multiples of 10 up to 50. We have also completed our end of Spring term assessments.

In art this week we explored the paintings and inspiration of Henri Rousseau. Although he never actually visited a jungle, he would take his easel and paints to large plant filled glasshouses and imagine wildlife exploring the undergrowth. One of his most famous paintings was ‘Surprise’ and this featured a predatory tiger roaming between the tress, plants, and bushes. Inspired by this painting we worked cooperatively to create paintings of large jungles mixing a range of green shades.

In history this week we have been looking at Victorian homes and comparing them to the homes we live in today. We looked closely at the differences between items we would find in a Victorian kitchen compared to our kitchens at home today. Washing clothes with the washboard and mangle seemed like a lot of work!

In PE, we practised different ways to throw and catch our ball with our partner.

In RE, we decorated an empty cross with pictures and symbols to show the importance of Easter to Christians.

This week it has been ‘British Science Week’. To celebrate this, we have taken part in lots of experiments, including:

  • Tabletop Glaciers – looking how warm can affect the melting of ice and how we could do our bit to help the world from warming up.
  • Should We Flush it Away? Experimenting with different materials to see if they would dissolve in water or not.
  • Magic Ink – making a secret message with water and bicarbonate of soda, then painting over the top with a mixture of hand sanitizer and turmeric to reveal the message. We had so much fun!

We are very excited to welcome Mr Beattie into Year One as a student teacher and look forward to having him in our class until June.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
