Year 1 w/b 10th June 2024

We've had a lovely week of learning this week in Year One. In English we have been exploring our new book “The Night Pirates” focusing on adjectives and thinking of interesting words to describe the grown-up pirates and the girl pirates. We had some great ideas such as “cheeky, tired, grumpy, mischievous”. We had to use our phonic knowledge to spell the words such as remembering brave has the ‘a-e’ split diagraph. Later on, in the week we then had the challenge to edit and punctuate a pirate letter which had lots of grammar missing which we had to edit. We had to spot what was missing such as capital letters, full stops and question marks. The children did a great job of spotting these errors and correcting them! We finished the week by creating our own text maps and planning to write a letter in reply from the Night Pirates to Tom. Next week we will use our writing skills to write our letters.
In maths this week we have been exploring money which is so interesting and fun as we use this every day. It was great for the children to apply what they already know about money. We had to identify coins, notes and add totals together. Please practice paying with coins in the shops as this real-life learning is great practice for the children to help develop this skill.
In worship this week we have focused on The Golden Glue for Spirituality and what this truly means. We thought about “ow” and “wow” moments that we have in life and how we can mend each other like the potter with the gold. We can help each like the cracks in the pottery by saying kind words and helping one another. Sometimes pots can crack or break. Sometimes things happen that can make us feel cracked or changed. Christians believe whatever happens to them in life, God is with them. God can fill and mend gaps and put everyone back together. Just like the golden glue in the story. The children learnt that Spirituality is like that golden glue.
Our PE lesson was super exciting this week as we had the Cheshire Cricket coach in. The children practised lots of catching and throwing routines and then went onto batting to finish. The children were taught that they need to keep their eye on the ball and use two hands to catch the ball. They also learnt how to hold the cricket bat properly and how to stand when batting.
In phonics the children have been amazing in the Phonics Screening Check and have tried their very best. We are super proud of their efforts and achievements with spotting the special friends and using their phonic knowledge to sound and blend the real and alien words. Well done children, give yourself a big pat on the back!
In science this week, we have been learning about plants and the children had to label a sunflower. We are also growing our very own class sunflower and the children have been helping to water it each day. We also discussed seasonal change and how deciduous trees change and alter during the different seasons. Now we are in summer the children knew that we should see lots of lovely new growth and green leaves on the trees. When you’re out and about this weekend see if you can spot some deciduous trees in our local area!
In RE we have been starting our new unit all about Joseph and what makes him a bible hero. The children did some great drama pieces acting out the story from The Lion Storyteller Bible. We discussed key words from the story “Joseph the Dreamer” to begin our new unit. The children came up with key words which they thought were the most important parts of the story such as dreamer, father, dreams, coat, brothers, jealous and sad. They also had to match the objects to the certain parts in the story such as the colourful coat, the twenty silver coins, stems of wheat and so forth. The children had lots of lovely discussions and ideas about our RE lesson this week. We then finished our lesson with re-enacting the story using drama and props. The children were amazing and got into character retelling the story as a class.
In Geography we have been looking at the countries that make up the United Kingdom. We then used this information to look at beaches around the UK and could identify human and physical features. This meant we revisited previous learning to ensure it has stuck whilst linking to our current topic.
This week we started a new music unit called ‘Blast Off’. This week we have focussed on pulse (the steady beat or heart beat of the music) and tempo (the speed of the music) through our space themed song. Your child may want to share this song at home:
A space rocket, a space rocket,
Sun, moon, stars and a space rocket.
Let’s blast of, let’s blast off,
Sun, moon, stars and a space rocket.
We hope you all have a fantastic weekend making lots of memories and see you all fresh and ready for a new week of learning.
