Year 1 at the Catalyst Museum
Date: 27th Jun 2023 @ 5:59pm
Our science day of learning at the Catalyst Museum has exceeded our expectations, what a wonderful adventure we have had. We began the day in the hands on learning galleries where we:
Used solar energy to make planes fly
Used thermal imagery to experiment which are the hottest parts of our bodies
Made bulbs light up and fans turn on in the electrical circuit section
We were mini TV stars in our own weather reports
Created our own miniature films using sequence photography
Built and tested our own parachutes to see how surface area affects wind resistance
Used our problem solving skills to create a track for a ball to travel through tunnels and over obstacles.
Used air speed to make materials travel and thought about how to block the tunnel to make them change direction.
We then travelled by glass elevator up to the observation deck on the 4th floor. Here we observed the River Mersey and discussed the human and physical features we could see on the landscape.
Then it was time for a well deserved lunch before our afternoon workshops.
In the afternoon we participated in two fabric printing workshops . First we looked at the way fabric could be dyed using natural materials such as coffee, blackberries and red onions. Next we discovered how to tie dye fabric using elastic bands, pegs and dipping our fabric in ink. Finally, we chose paper images and learned how to lay them on cloth and cover them with a screen before adding fabric paint to push through the mesh . We have brought our screen prints back to school to dry and hope to send them home tomorrow.
We hope you have already heard all about our exciting day and the photographs attached reflect just some of our learning and enjoyment.
Many thanks
