Year 4 blog – Spring 1 – Week 4

On Monday, we had a visit from an inspirational man called David Coleman, who, through resilience, determination, and hard work, was able to achieve his aspirations.

In guided reading we have looked closely at the different themes that run through the story of Mulan and finding evidence to support this. The children have been trying hard to read with more fluency and are becoming more and more confident at reading aloud to their peers.

We started this week in English with a bit of role play to try and persuade our friends to eat certain vegetables that they didn’t like or didn’t want to try. The MP, Fiona Bruce, wrote us a letter to explain the tactics that politicians use to persuade their voters, and we had a chance to try these out on each other. This filtered nicely into our discussion on persuasive language and writing persuasive sentences.

This week in spelling we have been spelling words where the word endings are spelt -sion: infusion, corrosion, and the suffix -ation: inform + ation = information, admire + ation = admiration, graduate + ation = graduation.

Our spellings to learn are: infusion, television, explosion, illusion, information, sensation, education, punctuation, favourite, and mention.

We have started our new maths unit on length and perimeter and have looked at mm, cm, m, and km. We talked about how kilometres are greater than meters and are used to measure greater distances. Then we partitioned some measurements into the number of kilometres and meters and made links with addition. Bar models and part-whole models were also used to explore this relationship.

Our Makaton phrase this week – I am walking to church.

Our church service was on Thursday, and what a glorious walk we had! We were all very impressed with how respectful the children were, how eager they were to participate in the discussions, and of course, not forgetting their fabulous singing.

Our ability to write HTML code is coming on well. After inspecting 'tags' in previous lessons we now applied our knowledge to tinlker with a given set of code: https://trinket.io/html/58318bee1f. This specific code allows us to design web pages. Ove the last few lessons remaining we will begin to take more control of the content of a given page, developing the images and the design.

In Music, we are making headway with our quality of sound and our string pitch knowledge. This week, we learnt two new songs: Swing and Sway and Charlie Chicken. We hope to be introducing the bows next week.

Working towards our Multiplication Tables Check that each child will take in June, Mrs McAree introduced the children to a wonderful online game. Set in a bowling alley, the children gain skills depending on how many questions they answer correctly. It is safe to say, the class have loved this game this week. Here is the link for them to play at home: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/504/Super-Maths-Bowling-Multiplication
