Week beginning 27th February

This week in Year 1 we have been rather busy. In Literacy, we have been exploring our new story, Captain Yellowbelly. On Tuesday we followed a trail that had been left for us and as a result we found a ‘treasure kit’. Luckily, although we discovered it belonged to a pirate, he was a very a friendly pirate. We then went on to write some questions that we would like to ask him.

In Maths, we have been looking closely at number work. The children have done really well with sequencing, counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 and representing numbers using objects. We have explored at the amount of tens and ones that each number contains and how this can help us when adding numbers together. Next week we will go on to adding and subtracting a variety of numbers.

In Science, we explored a variety of fruits and vegetables that can be grown in our gardens. We looked closely at the texture and smell, before going on to draw pictures using the detail we discovered through magnifying glasses.

On Thursday it was World Book Day and Year 1 all looked fantastic! Thank you to everyone for helping with costumes. Each child was able to come and share their views about their favourite book and explain to the rest of the class why they had chosen that particular text. During the day we had time to share books with the rest of the school and a chance to write a blurb about our preferred book. During the afternoon we went on to explore the story ‘A Child of Books’ by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston and we were able to recreate some of the scenes from the book. Together with the work from Reception and Year 2, we will be creating a new display in our corridoor.
