Week beginning 13th March
Date: 19th Feb 2017 @ 12:14pm
It has been another exciting week in year 1. On Monday we were lucky enough to have Holmes Chapel Fire Service in to visit us. They brought with them their fire engine, equipment and fire fighters to share their experiences with us. We had a fantastic time asking questions and hearing what it is like to be a real life superhero. We would all like to say thank you to them for giving up their time to come and visit us.
This led into our English work for the week. We based our writing around the key facts that make firefighters superheroes as well as looking at adjectives to describe them. In addition to this we had a focus in our writing this week of spelling. We used the sounds in the words to help us spell tricky and challenging phonemes. This is something we will continue next half term.
In Maths this week we recapped place value and addition. We all demonstrated a good understanding of this, especially whilst using numicon and counters. It is clear from the work this week that exploring numbers using numicon really helps us, so we will continue to use this next half term.
On Friday we had our Superhero Day. What a fantastic day we had! We started the day by completing a variety of activities, such as; mask making, measuring superheroes and writing questions. After break we went through to Miss Goff who helped us learn more facts about our superheroes and then tested us with an exciting quiz. During the afternoon we had the chance to explore the hall as it had been changed into an obstacle course. The day was a huge success, so thank you for your help with all of the costumes.
Over half term we are encouraging lots of practise with phonics. I have put together some phonics packs which should have come home on Friday. In there is a little note to explain that we are giving the children as many opportunities as possible to practise reading the sounds that they have been learning. Alongside this we would like for you to keep reading with your children every day, whether it is their reading book or a book of their choice.
Wishing you all a lovely half term.
