A gloriously sunny week at school, this week!
We have enjoyed playing out on the field with a few added afternoon breaktimes to take advantage of the weather. It has also been a perfect week for some new sports ventures to start up: Josh, Luke, Esmae and Freddie are running a tennis club at breaks and are showing great responsibility and pride in organising the equipment and letting everyone know. Well done to you three! It is proving very popular too.
PE this week has focussed on practising towards Sports day which will be on Monday 15th July, straight after registration. Mr Aspinall has also been in to take the summer term PE assessments. This assesses coordination, flexibility, speed, the many aspects of physical movement required for the varied PE curriculum.
Indoors, we have begun a new unit of writing: our adversity narrative. We are to write a short story of how someone famous overcame adversity and made a positive impact on the world. With the Olympics coming up (not the Winter one though), we are finding out and writing about Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards. He faced many challenges throughout his training, eventually coming last in his two events but, being the first person to represent GB in his field, he became a GB record holder. It is his spirit that we would like to capture too- that determination with a smile.
Battleships was the name of the day in Maths! We have been learning about coordinates so it felt a perfect way to begin. We have also been covering reflective lines of symmetry and translation. The children have now covered all topics towards their end of year assessment which we will support them with next week.
RE, PSHE and Forest School have tied in nicely this week. We have been taking quiet moments of contemplation, focussing on our energies through breathing and also mindfulness tasks. We are creating Prayer Stations in Forest School- places for moments of stillness and reflection. This week, we have carefully, slowly, completed artwork on prayer stones. In the beautiful natural surroundings of Forest School, the children took the time to check in with how they were feeling and take some time to stop and switch off.
Music is coming along well. We continue to learn Because He Lives and have now completed a scale of Dmajor which coveres eight consecutive notes. The children love playing along to a funk drummer backing track like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXG806BLqQw
In History, we have been learning about the features of a volcano. They also understand that there are different types of volcanos and that volcanoes can be active, dormant or extinct.
Congratulations to Tom, Freddie and Megan who took part in a concert with the Co-op Wind Band. A great achievement!
Certificates went to Esmae and Elizabeth this week. Esmae's was for an absolute 'WOW!' moment in English and Elizabeth's for her respect and kindness in helping Miss Mitton and the Reception children at lunch. Well done to you both!
We hope you have a peaceful, sunny weekend.
Mrs Tice, Mrs Gleave and Mrs Warren.
