As our half term drew to a close, several of our subject units did too.
First of all, our writing based on The Whale, which had already produced some beautiful story writing, inspired our newspaper writing and design. Initially, the children focussed on delivering the news in a succinct but engaging way, using alliteration, snappy headlines and direct and reported witness accounts. Then, we began our design looking at the lost art of pasting-up a front cover. This involves cutting everything out- columns, headline, by-line, additional adverts etc beforearranging them on a blank A3 sheet. The final design is then stuck down. We have copied these and stuck them into our books and hope to send the original mock-up home so the children can show you what a wonderful job they did.
Also completed is our initial Maths unit on column addition and subtraction. This involved some quite tricky word problems that required several steps to complete. This was supported by the homework the children had completed alongside. Well done to everyone for their efforts.
In anticipation of next half term’s music lessons, the children revisited the introduction video to the string family: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP2_6OLummA. This is performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and is part of a series of films introducing all the instruments in an orchestra. The children have now chosen their instruments and I look forward to their next step on their musical journey.
Well done to everyone who brought in a pumpkin design on Thursday. All were beautiful entries and we had time as a class to look at everyone’s carving. It was also a lovely surprise to see Mrs Pullé who returned as one of the judges.
Finally, Mr Cotton completed the Digestive System unit with his now-famous experiment involving a pair of tights, a potato masher, some banana and some milk! These are used to recreate our intestines. As you can imagine, the children had a fantastic time! He also revealed the results of the egg and drink experiment which clearly showed the importance of brushing your teeth particularly after drinking chocolate milk!
Well done to Year 4 for a fantastic half term and we look forward to more fun-filled learning after the holiday.
