wb 2.10.23 Year 4

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 2:50pm

We have continued our investigations into the style of newspaper writing this week. Part of this has been to use apostrophes correctly. We are focussing on two types of apostrophe. The first is an apostrophe for possession. For example, The dog’s nose or The dogs’ noses. Of course, this depends on how many dogs there are!

Another use for an apostrophe is for contraction, when a letter is removed from two words in order to create one. ‘Do not’ becomes ‘don’t’. As a result, we have been talking in a slightly posh voice-“ Please do not sit there” as opposed to “Don’t sit there!”

Maths has seen the beginning of column addition with exchanges. We have been practising how to carry and exchange into the next column. Then we try not to forget to add them on! We have also focussed on our 3 times table this week, seeking out patterns and counting in 3s ascending and descending.

In History, Mrs Pirie has been exploring how trade changed lives during the Stone Age, encouraging people to travel to seek and sell different items. This will link in well with our future work on Vikings leading up to our York trip.

In Music, we finally began playing our instruments-  the violin, cello and viola. We identified several strings and learnt how to pluck to the beat. We learnt our first song- Charlie Chicken. Our work over the years with keeping a steady beat will now be very important as we create our Year 4 ensemble. Bows will be used in a few weeks!

In RE, we completed a fantastic piece of writing, again in the style of a newspaper. This reported how a small shepherd called David somehow defeated a giant Philistine called Goliath! As a follow on from our worship assembly, the children also began to look into the lives of Mary Seacole and Harriet Tubman. This is part of Black History Month, reinforcing our work in No Outsiders and throughout the school in our school values. Our current theme of Respect is a golden thread throughout these subjects.

You may have heard about the excitement Rock Steady brought to the school on Tuesday. The hall was filled with the sounds of talented Jacob Naylor, from Rock Steady, as he not only demonstrated the guitar, bass, keyboard and drums skilfully for us, but also created a band before our eyes and ears from our very own pupils. Many children signed up to be part of the bands that will run in school next half term and there is also currently a waiting list.

So over the weekend, the children have the return of the 4 times table to focus on and also some homework to complete. Above all, we hope you have a lovely weekend with not too much rain!
