We are already nearing the writing phase of our first unit- to write a setting for a story. Whilst discussing powerful words that can evoke an atmosphere, we have been focussing on key skills of sentence writing and handwriting. Next week, we will bring together ideas as we write an opening to our story to track down the ‘elusive whale’. It may be that the ominous clouds suggest impending doom!
Our place value work is coming on a pace, as we remember our estimating skills as well as comparing numbers. This week, we have worked with 5-digit numbers and have used number lines with varying intervals of 10, 100 or 1,000.
Next week, we will begin a new focus- our times table of the week. This will be set on a Monday and is meant to be worked on at home as well as in class. By the end of the week, it is hoped each child will be able to recite the focus times table. Next week, it's the turn of the 4 times table.
In Spelling, our key focus is currently prefixes, as you will see from our spelling test list.
The children had a very exciting session with Mrs Taylor and Mrs Warren this week as they practised the skill of threading a needle successfully. This will set them up for independent work in the coming weeks. In class, we also had a go at making our own Google Form survey. We looked at different questions- rated, choice or text questions which required a different answer input. History has looked at different ages- Stone Ages, Neolithic Ages building a timeline and in RE we began our work on the Psalms and a description of the qualities that God looks for within each of us.
Yesterday, the sun actually shone down on us as we walked to church for our first visit of the academic year. Reverand Sandi spoke to us about this half term's value- Respect. She encouraged us to notice that once words are out of our mouths, they can never be taken back, rather like toothpaste squeezed out of a tube. Tom and Megan read beautifully when Reverand Sandi asked for prayer readers and became well-deserved stars of the week. After some juice and biscuits we strolled back along the lane enjoying the autumn sun.
As the week drew to a close, our Spanish unit took us across the globe as we found not only Spain but also Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries around the world. In Music, we reminded ourselves of how to write a rhythm as well as showing the beat, conductor-style.
After a mostly blustery, wet week, I hope the sun shines a little this weekend and that you all get to have some fun.
