A successful return to school so far, it's great to see the children happy to be back with their friends.
Maths: we are focussing on arithmetic at the moment and have worked our way through addition and subtraction including decimals and this week we have been doing long and short multiplication. the long version is proving a bit of a challenge for some but we have tried a couple of approaches. Times tables knowledge is an occasional barrier.
English: we are immersing ourselves in the notion of exploring, adventure and survival in the wilderness, building up a lot of vocabulary and work on sentence construction and description. Today the children found themselves struggling through their own bit of wilderness in the woodland walk.
Guided reading; we are enjoying finding out about Tom and Willie in the book 'Goodnight Mr. Tom'. The main question focus is on inference.
Spelling: We have worked on letters with silent b and words containing the letter string -ough.
RE: we are learning about God and how Christians describe Him. From these descriptions the children have come up with their own questions that puzzle them about God.
Science: we are learning about classifying plants and animals using classification diagrams. We have learnt some interesting words to group different animals and scrutinise the characteristics that put them into their distinct groups.
PE: the children have really enjoyed the expertise of the Multiflex coaches teaching them skills in tag rugby. Their behaviour and concentration have been excellent.
Handwriting: some of the children are re-learning to join letters again and we are focussing on presentation and transferring this to our other workbooks.
Geography: We have done some mapwork on places in the United Kingdom and also started locating some of the places mentioned in history work.
History: the children are being taught by Mrs Tice and have been thinking about their rights as children. This has now led onto the beginnings of law and order by investigating the circumstances leading to the signing of the Magna Carta.
Art: this is connected to history and our first session focussed on looking at the features of original Suffragette posters with a view to designing our own.
PSE/worship: we have been talking and learning about resilience - how to cope with situations that we sometimes find difficult and learning that we have choices about how we do this.
Outdoor learning: we have had 1 session with Mr. Simmons so far and have been learning about how to navigate the school grounds using our knowledge of angles and directions.
The children are now settled in and working well together. It has been particularly nice to see how well they have interacted with each other at breaktimes. Let's keep this positive start going.
