Reception's blog W.B. Monday 21st October

Date: 24th Oct 2019 @ 1:51pm

Can you believe that the children have been here for a whole half term already? What a wonderful time we’ve had so far in Reception.

This week we’ve strengthened our knowledge of numbers 0-5 by continuing to practise formation and sequencing them. As well as this, the children’s learning objective has been to understand what add means as well as being able to add two numbers together. We’ve not exceeded totals of 5 to ensure the children are confident in finding and writing the answer. We’ve added fruit, multilink and even each other! Please continue to practice the formation at home to ensure we’re writing our numbers the right way round.

In literacy, we have introduced the children to ‘Farmer Duck’. We loved learning this story and have focused on sequencing it and writing out the character names. We concentrated on the CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words so the children were able to segment and blend them independently.

In phonics, the children have learnt the new sounds e, k and f. These sounds are particularly tricky to write and so will need extra practise whenever possible.

On Thursday, we celebrated all things ‘under the sea’ by having a topic themed dress up day. Your costume efforts were outstanding and we’re so pleased you all got involved. We started our morning with a circle time, discussing our costumes and why we chose them. We were then challenged to draw a self-portrait and label them using our phonics knowledge. Later in the morning we made delicious jellyfish inspired biscuits using strawberry laces, marshmallows and biscuits with icing. This was really fun despite it being really sticky. We’ve also made rainbow fish pictures, painted puffer fish, drawn shells as well as taking part in ‘under the sea’ yoga. It was a brilliant day and we all had so much fun.

It’s safe to say that our first half term has been a busy one but what fun we’ve had! We have loved getting to know our new class and really feel that all your children have settled in to school life seamlessly. We hope you have the most wonderful week off and we look forward to hearing all about your adventures when we’re back.

Thank you for all your hard work and support over these last two months,

The Reception Team.
