Reception's Blog - Week Beginning Monday 5th October

Reception have been a delight again this week. They are really understanding the routines in Reception now and are flourishing as a result.

One of our highlights this week has been our afternoon with Mr Simmons in Forest Schools. We went through the woodlands and found different coloured leaves ready to use in class next week. The children have been discussing the affects of autumn on trees and leaves as well as talking about the different patterns they can see in the forest.

Literacy this week has consisted of labelling, letter formation and identifying the initial sounds in words. As you can see from the pictures, some of the children have been identifying the initial sound, some have moved on to establishing two sounds in a word and others have been writing the whole words; this is something we will continue next week. One thing that the children are enjoying doing is forming letters using the rhymes from our phonics sessions and this seems to have given them a real confidence boost.

In Maths, we have been focussing on the numbers 4 + 5 as well as looking at patterns and sequencing. We are finding that the children are able to count using 1:1 correspondence but they have a little trouble identifying and writing the number so this has been a real focus.

In our topic lessons we have been using our ‘autumn treasure’ from last week to create patterns and paintings. We have used conkers to paint and leaves to rub. These activities have been put into our continuous provision areas and the children have thoroughly enjoyed completing them independently too.
