Week 3
This week has flown by! In Literacy we have been making up our own superhero stories. We designed our own superheroes and we decided on where the story would be set what problem our hero would have to tackle and how they would resolve it. When reading stories with your child challenge them to identify the problem and the resolution. Is there more than one problem?
In Maths we have been focussing on addition. We received superhero envelopes full of Numicon and the children had to calculate the total. On Thursday we discovered Super Ted chained and padlocked. In order to free him we had to solve the sum and find the key with the correct answer. Spiderman also sent the children a challenge to write and solve their own addition sum during their choosing time. Well done to all of the children who completed this! Why not practise writing and solving addition sums at home?
Phonics groups have altered slightly following Miss Stewart’s departure. We are working on developing the children’s independent writing skills and all pupils now how phonics books to word their words and sentences. We have updated the sound and word wallets today so you have all of the phonic sounds that your child has been taught. Please practise reading and writing words containing these sounds, encouraging the children to use their ‘Fred Fingers’ to sound out the words independently and write the sounds that they hear.
This week we have also celebrated Chinese New Year. 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. We learnt how the years came to be named after animals and how the order was decided. Can you remember who finished first? Or why the pig was last? We learnt that people prepare for the New Year by cleaning the house and they celebrate by giving gifts of money in red envelopes. We couldn’t let the occasion pass without trying some delicious Chinese food!
In RE we have continued our work on ‘The Kingdom of God.’ Today we learnt about four famous monarchs: Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Victoria I and Elizabeth II. We investigated their accomplishments and we discussed if they were a good or a bad king/queen. Our conclusion was we are very lucky to have Queen Elizabeth II ruling over us!
A big thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who attended the Stay and Make session on Wednesday. The models are now on display in our corridor if you want to pop in and have a look. They really do look SUPER!
