Reception ~ W/B 18th January 2016

This week…
we have been continuing to learn our non-chronological report about polar bears. We have used openers such as ‘Interestingly…, Surprisingly…, Did you know…’ and ‘Amazingly.’ Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of the map we use to help us before I left school but I will endeavour to upload one on Monday. We have written some wonderful labels and we have sadly learnt that polar bears could be wiped out in 100 years. All the pupils were eager to find out more about this so we researched global warming and came up with ideas as to how we could help. Your lovely children have decided they would like to host a cake sale in order to raise funds and they worked really hard to make fabulous posters informing the rest of the school about the event. All money raised will be donated to the WWF who work tirelessly to help stop the destruction of the polar bears habitat. So, for homework we would really appreciate it if you could bake some delicious goodies to sell. The bake sale will take place on Wednesday 27th January. Thank you in advance.
As well as raising funds we have also looked at what we can do at home and at school to help combat global warming. The children have been busy writing labels to display around the school, reminding us to switch lights and computers off and shut doors. They have also been eagerly sorting my recycling and finding out that almost everything can be recycled. Together, we compiled a list of questions to discuss at home. As a result of this work we are all trying a little bit harder at school to try and reduce our carbon footprint (and save money!). Some recycling games are listed below:

In Maths this week we have been solving addition sums using a number line. Playing board games are a great way to practise this skill in a fun way at home. Some games are also included below:

During our science we had great fun with Miss Nolan making snow. See our ‘Making Snow’ blog to find out more and have a go at home!
We have also been learning about sorting animals depending upon their similarities and differences. The children had some great ideas on how to sort their animals, such as can climb/can’t climb, can swim/can’t swim, has a tail/has no tail and has horns/has tusks.
Thank you for your ongoing support and I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Get lots of rest as we have lots of exciting Burns’ Night activities planned for Monday, including some traditional Scottish dancing!
