new term letter
Date: 18th Jan 2019 @ 10:32am
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year. This letter outlines some of the arrangements for the spring term.
On Tuesday afternoons I will be out of class working alongside Mrs. McClean. The children will be taught RE by Mrs. Pulle who is our RE subject leader and Collective Worship leader. I am also out of class on Friday afternoons for my weekly planning and preparation time. This term the children will be taught PE on Friday afternoons by our sports coach and then have Mrs. Taylor for music. For the first half term the class is doing gymnastics so indoor school PE kit is required. Please ensure that all items are clearly named. The children are responsible for their own belongings.
The date for our residential trip to Pensarn is Monday 1st April to Friday 5th April. I am currently in touch with the administration staff at CMC to finalise our itinerary and activity programme. You should have received a note in your child’s planner that there is a meeting for parents on January 30th at 3:30pm to go through all the details.
The Spotlight Author this term is Michelle Magorian and the novel we will be studying in guided reading is called ‘Goodnight Mr. Tom’.
This term we complete the topic entitled ‘War, plot and revolution’. We have learnt about The Act of Union in the first week and are now going on to learn about what it was like for children in World War Two up to Easter.
Homework will be given out from next Monday. MyMaths or another maths homework will be given out on Monday to be completed by Wednesday, English will be given out Wednesday to be returned to school the following Monday. English homework may comprise a piece of writing based on a picture or a written stimulus, or it may be connected to ongoing work in English or topic. The children will be fully briefed on the expectations for their year group. This will enable them to write more independently and creatively, and will enable parents to support their children’s writing at home. Any homework may be substituted for SATs revision homework also. The children also have multiplication squares to complete. They have been asked to complete one each evening.
SATs revision sessions will start wb: 14.1.19. I intend to work up to 1 hour for up to 3 afternoons per week for this purpose. We will be revising all aspects of arithmetic including fractions, decimals and percentages plus looking very closely at worded problems and using past SATs papers. We will be revising all aspects of grammar and punctuation as well as covering new ones. For reading revision we will be using past SATs papers and looking very closely at how to gain the maximum marks for each type of question. These sessions will inevitably cut down the time we can spend on subjects such as topic work, music, PHSE, french and computing, however I will do my best to cover as much as we can.
Miss Cowen (student teacher) will return to year 6 on January 14th for 3 weeks and will be teaching the class as before under my supervision. Miss Cowen has proved herself to be a very capable teacher and the children have enjoyed her lessons.
Mrs Wood has arranged for year 6 to go on a Tech Awareness course run by Barclays. This visit takes place on March 26th and further details will follow.
All children need to have a water bottle in school each day. They will always have access to water at appropriate times.
May I remind you that the school website is a valuable source of information about school events, including the weekly newsletter. Also your child has access to their own homepage via the learning platform.
If you need to see me with regard to school arrangements or any issues with your child, I would prefer you to make an appointment via Mrs. Sant for the end of the school day on Monday or Wednesday.
Mr. T. Collier.
