This week, in English, we have set our heroes and heroines on a quest to find an elusive whale as our writing unit has come to a close. The children have been working hard in each English lesson to write clear sentence with key skills. And yet they have managed so much more. There has been high drama on the high seas all week as we have been writing, editing and sharing our work. We are now looking forward to our next writing project- newspaper articles. In spelling, we have also moved on to our next unit- the zhuh sound spelt -sure. This appears in words such as measure, leisure and pleasure. I’m sure you can predict our weekly spellings over the next few weeks!
Maths has set us some challenges this week, as we have been looking at rounding to the nearest 1000, 100 and 10. We have also been practising our 4 times table in class as we begin our weekly times table practice. Next week, it’s the 3 times table. Tuesday saw the return of Open the Book, the visiting drama group that reenact bible stories, bringing the teachings to life for the children. Seb, Sebastian and Bella took part as the group acted out the man who built his house on sand. Of course, it was the man who built his house on the values of God (and also on stone) who proved to have a secure home that stood the challenges of life.
Mr Cotton took the children out on a minibeast search as the children continued their classification learning, sorting animals into insects, birds and mammals. Our Guided Reading continued to support the Science learning as we looked at the book Habitats. We explored the words biome and ecosystem, discussing how species can adapt to their environment.
As part of our PSHE work, we looked at our No Outsiders book of this half term. This time, the subject was marriage and what this can look like in the UK. Our vehicle text, King and King, was enjoyed by the children, not least for the antics of the cat in the wonderful illustrations. A lively conversation followed and I was very impressed by the maturity Year 4 showed to the thoughts raised.
Celebration assembly celebrated Maizie Simpson's determination in her writing and also the triumph of the Year 4 netball team. Well done to you all!
Well done, Year 4, on a fabulous week of learning. I look forward to more next week.
