Chemistry with cabbage

Date: 22nd Nov 2016 @ 11:41am

Last Friday's science day was a huge success. The children thoroughly enjoyed working with Ruth from Chemistry with Cabbage, through a series of experiments that built on each other over the course of the day. They learnt about indicators, acids and alkalis, and what to in the event of an acid spill on the motorway which is always useful information. The also made a polymer by combining different chemicals (the green slime that they brought home). It was great to see the 'awe and wonder' moments when chemicals changed colour or fizzed up, and when Ruth put out a series of candles by 'pouring' carbon dioxide over them, the carbon dioxide having been produced from combining chemicals from an earlier experiment.

If your child would like to pursue this further they can log onto the website called 'Chemistry with cabbage' and click on the experiments tab. There are lots of different things that can be tried with substances that can usually be found around the house - fun for all the family(!)
