Blast off!
Date: 6th Mar 2015 @ 2:38pm
Last week the children started the second half of their 'Out of this World!' topic. We are now learning about SPACE! We began this topic with a visit to Jodrell Bank and have started to read fiction and non-fiction books in class with a space theme.
This week the children have worked hard with Mrs Taylor designing and making moon buggies. They look fantastic, we even tested if they would move over the bumpy playground as we thought that might be a simalar surface to the rocky moon. Maybe your child could carry out some research in to the Apollo 11 moon landing.
In numeracy this week the children have been learning about the values of money and have helped Neil Armstrong to buy his items to take to space. We have practised counting 1ps, 2ps, 5ps and 10ps in their values as well as finding change from 50p. We ended the week by working with our kagan team to build a ROCKET! The children had a budget of £2.50, they had to work together to count the coins and then buy the items they felt were most important. BUT Miss Phillips was a little bit mean ... if the children couldn't tell her what change they needed, she was going to keep the money for her chocolate fund (unfortunately the children are getting far to clever!)
I have included a picture of the rocket and how much the different parts cost. Can your child add up the totals and find out what change they would have from 50p?
In literacy we are learning to retell the story of 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy. Next week the children will be writing their own main event. This weekend see if your child can tell you what their character (Baby Bear) will get up to on the moon ... and can they make it really interesting!
A super week from Year 1.
