This week has been assessment week and the children have been working hard. During the week, they have all completed their PIRA reading assessments which will inform their reading age and level of book choice. Throughout the day, all children have times to enjoy their current reading books as well as work more in depth in the Guided Reading sessions. There are also opportunities throughout the week to listen to the class book as read by an adult.
We have begun a new book to explore in our Guided Reading session- The Night of the Gargoyles. As with so many of our books, this is beautifully illustrated, bringing the gargoyles to life and following all their menace throughout the night. The tale of their antics is written in poetry form and as such uses light-hearted vocabulary and poetic licence. The level of inference required is therefore quite high and, whilst being great fun for our pupils, poses a challenge to their comprehension skills.
We have reached a close in our storytelling based on the book Leaf. We have completed a five-paragraph tale of being lost in a foreign land, attempting to escape, injury, finding new friends and our final freedom after some searching for a way home. Our key grammar focus has been on pronouns, fronted adverbials, conjunctions and expanded noun phrases. These, used together, will lift our storytelling and generate a piece full of imagery and emotions. Next week, we will begin our next writing project, drawing inspiration from Leaf again.
Our fraction work is coming on apace in our Maths lessons. This week we have added and subtracted proper and improper fractions and also moved on to adding and subtracting mixed numbers. This is often aided with visual resources such as bar models or part/whole models. We have also been focussing on the 8 times table. Next week, we will cover 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9s together. This is completed in our Maths Fluency section of the day and just before break and lunchtime.
Our RE work has been complemented by some stunning paintings that depict Judas’ kiss of betrayal that leads to Jesus’ arrest. The children discussed and wrote their opinions on these works, looking at the choices the artists made to convey the poignancy and emotion of the act. We also considered the theme of Trust when we visited Reverend Sandi at St Oswald’s Thank you to the parents who were able o join us-0 it is always wonderful to see you and have your support.
Thank you to all who provided worm food for our experiment in Forest School. Rather than a closed compost heap, we will keep our eye on how the scraps decompose and what role to worms play in this. We hope you enjoy the attached photos!
Many thanks to all who came to the information session for York. The PowerPoint is now available on the dropdown menu on our class page. If there are any concerns at all, please let me know.
This week’s Stars of the Week was Eli Wilson for a week of showing our school values strongly in all areas of school life.
Our 2% club winner was Elinor.
Congratulations to all.
We look forward to another fabulous week next week.
