14th May Year 6 blog
Date: 14th May 2021 @ 4:56pm
The weeks are starting to zip by quite quickly at the moment. Here is an update of our work this week.
ENGLISH: we have come to the end of our writing unit about Philippe Petit and the class have finished it off brilliantly with a really well written biography. We have focused heavily on the process of writing this week, so looking at different ways of starting sentences, choosing vocabulary for purpose, using lots of punctuation to aid understanding, aiming for overall cohesion and ensuring chronolgy. The class have worked so hard and the result is some excellent writing.
GUIDED READING: we are up to chapter 7 in our current book which the children are enjoying. In their written work they are showing off their knowledge of how to answer different types of questions and it is great to see them making the effort to re-read the text and check up on what they think they know. We have started reading chapter 7 and it's all about to start kicking off!
SPELLING: we seem to be having a bit of an ongoing issue with the ie/ei rule so we keep going back to that but currently we are working on making plurals from nouns ending in s, ss, x, sh, tch and ch.
MATHS: having completed the year 6 unit on ratio and proportion, we have gone back to cover a unit of work we missed during summer term last year, so we are doing a geometry unit and making sure we know all about angles and how to measure and draw them. We are also covering a lot of geometry knowledge elsewhere in the day, looking carefully at properties of regular and irregular 2D shapes and how to express these mathematically.
SCIENCE: this term we have been working on scientific processes all to do with bubbles. We have found the best concentration of soap to water, we have used this to investigate which is the best soap and we have a further investigation still to do. We have been focusing on close observation during our practical work and discussing what this actually tells us in relation to our key question.
RE: our work on the Holy Spirit has been quite challenging in some ways although we are coming to a clearer understanding of what some people believe and how the Holy Spirit can be identified in the work of individuals and groups. We are comparing Catholic and Pentecostal practices and the work of overseas agencies.
GEOGRAPHY: we have covered the first couple of areas in our project on the USA, identifying some key features of the country and then looking at physical geography. We have investigated how mountains are formed and identified some of the main mountain ranges. We have also looked at the different processes involved in the formation of the Grand Canyon.
PE: we started off with some skills development in football and then moved onto some team problem solving activities. For the last couple of weeks, we have been learning and perfecting gymnastic floor movements in the hall, with a view to putting together a sequence of movements using apparatus and floorwork.
SPANISH: we are recapping previously learnt vocabulary about colours and numbers, as well as moving onto classroom objects, subjects and instructions. We are using what we have learnt to start building up some short sentences verbally.
MUSIC: we are listening to jazz standards with musicians such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. The class have given some well considered responses to what they have heard, both positive and negative, although I don't think they will be downloading any at home any time soon.
Hope you have a great weekend.
