Year 2 w/b 9th January

Date: 13th Jan 2023 @ 10:52am

We have had a fantastic week of learning in Year Two.

On Monday, we read the first half of our text, Jack and the Baked Beanstalk. Then, in groups, we explored the following vocabulary from the book: flyover, overhead, thoughtfully, construction, resist, exchanged. To demonstrate our understanding, we defined the words, used them in a sentence and then drew a picture to represent each word. On Tuesday, we were introduced to our text map and began learning some actions. This helped us with some further vocabulary work as we discussed and agreed actions to best represent: doorstep, magnificent, company, isolated, entire, loneliness, superb, terrific, dreadful, friendless, filled with excitement, about time, in summary. On Wednesday, we applied our comprehension skills in order to answer a range of questions about the model text. On Thursday, we particularly focused on identifying questions and exclamations. This helped us to analyse our model text to identify the features of persuasive writing, finding examples of: questions, exclamations, alliteration, repetition, emotive language and words/phrases to start each reason. We are looking forward to planning our letter to Jack to persuade him to go up/ not go up the beanstalk.

Our spelling rule for this week was ‘the n sound spelt kn and gn’. This includes words such as: knight, knees, gnome and gnash.

In geography this week, we have revisited the 7 continents and 5 oceans. We looked at where they are on a map and what they climate is like there. We then drew the equator on a map of the world. We now know that Asia has a warmer climate than Europe because it is closer to the equator.

In science this week, we recapped what we have learned about keeping our bodies healthy. We then participated in a range of exercises such as: running, throwing and catching, and jumping to observe how it makes our bodies feel. After this, we found our pulse and counted how many beats we felt in 30 seconds. Most of us decided that running made our heart beat rise the most!

In maths this week, children have:

  • Learned that vertices are points where two or more sides of a polygon meet.
  • Explored reflective symmetry and identified shapes and images that have reflective symmetry and identified where the line of symmetry lies.
  • Drawn on their previous learning about properties of 2D shapes in order to sort polygons by different criteria.
  • Identified patterns involving 2D shapes. By isolating the pattern core, children have been able to identify missing terms.

On Thursday, we thoroughly enjoyed our class visit to St Oswald's Church. We discovered everyone has a tower and some days a block on our tower may get knocked, for example if somebody is unkind to us. In order for us to keep our tower tall, it is important for us to show kindness every day.

I am very proud of Year Two’s continued hard work and enthusiasm and I look forward to another wonderful week.
