We have had a very interesting week this week with events that have taken us out of the classroom.
A great highlight this week has been the Bikeability skills lessons. Although it was a blustery often wet day, the children had a superb time practising how to signal and control their bike with assurance. Each child has received a certificate and a badge for their session. Their skills will be extended in Year 6 when the instructors will return and take them out on to the road to practise real-life skills.
We also had three sessions with Will Hussey as we went in pursuit of the Art of Brilliance. These sessions challenged the children to look at their learning behaviours. It encouraged us to realise that certain behaviours prevented us from learning. For example, are we being entirely honest with ourselves about how hard we work? Do we do just enough but could easily do more? It encouraged us to picture ourselves at our best and then question if we were doing everything possible to achieve this.
Our newspaper writing is coming to an end as we amalgamate all the skills we have learnt this half term. These include our range of vocabulary such as concur, baffled, oceanographers and ominous. Next week, we will make a mock up of our newspaper looking at different size fonts and bold type.
In Maths, we are nearing the end of our addition and subtraction unit. This week, we have been subtracting with several exchanges and estimating by using our rounding skills. We have also really improved our 4 times tables. Next week, a new times table.
We have been preparing our presentation for next week's assembly too- all about community and looking after each other. As we grow in our diplomacy skills, it was lovely to see children pooling ideas on how to create a harmonious society.
In Guided Reading, we are finishing off our book about Habitats. The children are now very good at discussing biomes, keystone species and this week's topic, climate. We learnt that seasonal change or gradual shifts in temperature allow animals to adapt to their habitats. Problems arise when the shift is rapid. as in global warming.
At the end of the week, Penny and Elinor received certificates for their hard work in producing original and captivating writing in English.
We wish you a peaceful and sunny weekend.
