Reception's Blog - Week Beginning Monday 10th February
Date: 14th Feb 2020 @ 5:32pm
What a marvellous way to end of half term! Today the children have been making valentines biscuits and cards with Mrs Millington and Miss Lloyd. They started by colouring in delicate hearts with the colours that represent happiness before adding them to the front of cards and independently writing a message. The delicious biscuits were enjoyed with milk at snack time.
In Literacy and maths this week the children have been showing us the skills that they can now apply independently. They have been writing sentences with full stops and capital letters as well as using the part-whole model and adding to 10. It is wonderful to see how the children are working much more independently and finding resources to support their knowledge.
This week we have been assessing the children with their reading. They have all done really well and are showing super progress. Some parents have commented at the children are finding some of the books a little easy, but the aim of the new reading scheme is to enable to the children to build their confidence with reading as well as deepen their understanding and apply their own knowledge to the narrative before moving onto something they find challenging. This has proven to help the children progress quicker than if they are finding books tricky and becoming demotivated. We will continue to assess the children and move them forward when it is deemed appropriate.
As we embark on our half term week, we ask that the children still continue to read daily as well as practise their phonics sounds. We are now consolidating set 2 sounds and working on recognising and applying them in whilst reading and writing. The main sounds that we are focussing on in class are ‘ur’, ‘ir’, ‘er’, ‘oi’, ‘oy’ and ‘nk’.
We wish you all a wonderful half term and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Monday 24th February to start learning about our new topic book ‘Star in the Jar’.
