Mrs Kirsty Arthur - Reading Recovery Teacher/SENCO
I have taught at Brereton for approximately seven years now, in between having three children. I am the Special Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and the Reading Recovery Teacher, leading ECAR (Every Child a Reader) across the school. My big passion in life is reading, whether with children at school, my own children or on my own. Outside school I enjoy spending time with my children and I am a bit of a gym fanatic!

At Brereton we love reading!

We learn to read in every single class, every single day. We learn in shared reading, modelled reading, being read to by our teachers, reading to an adult, guided reading and reading to ourselves.  We also learn to decode words and read them during our phonics lessons. We learn to love books through our author studies and when our teachers read great books to us. Every class has their own class library and there is a wide range of banded reading books.

We want every child to learn to love reading. The book bands are a guide to help children to progress at the right level. They are not designed to race through! Reading is not a competition to rush through to get to magenta level and beyond. We want everyone to understand what they read as well as be able to decode every word.

Please see FAQ - How can I help my child with Reading? for further details.

Reading is taught in guided reading groups. We have a guided reading lesson every day when children either read with their teacher or work independently on a text based activity. Children are taught the skills of reading: decoding, gaining meaning, retrieving information, inference, deduction, reading with expression and enjoyment.

For any child who is struggling with the reading process we have a range of interventions that may help. Mrs Arthur is the school's Reading Recovery Teacher. As an ECAR (see What is ECAR? in FAQ) school we are able to offer Reading Recovery, Reception Literacy Programme, Better Reading Partners, Inference, Fisher Family Trust Wave Three Reading Intervention alongside additional literacy interventions.
