Year 6 wb 2nd November.

Date: 6th Nov 2020 @ 5:23pm

Hope you all had a restful half term and are ready for the run up to Christmas.

Maths: we have now moved back to Power Maths but are still working on fractions. We have done a lot of work on equivalent fractions which we will now use as we add, subtract, multiply and divide with them starting next week.

English: We are continuing to work on the book 'Suffragette:the battle for equality'. This week we have worked on active and passive sentences and also starting work on a balanced argument. This is about whether or not the Suffragettes were right to embark on more militant action when their peaceful protests yielded no change in government policy.

RE: We have started a unit of work on Christian Community: faith in action. This kicked off with a very interesting discussion on the Christian values held in school and specifically the value of love.

PHSCE: We are using the Heartsmart scheme and this week focussed on having a Friday afternoon session of 'All about me'. The children thought about things that were special to them regardless of what they were and designed a pair of trainers with this in mind. The end results are extremely colourful and beautifully presented.

Guided reading: We are continuing with 'Goodnight Mr. Tom' this half term, a story which the children are really enjoying, especially as we delve into characters in greater depth and they can see the developing relationship between Willie and Tom, as Willie emerges from his shell and starts to blossom.

Spelling: Our focus next week is changing root words by adding the suffixes -ibly and -ably.

History: history work has moved into the latter half of the 20th century with the children looking at the change in culture as Britain entered the 1960s. They will also be maintaining the thread of civil rights as they look at this decade in more depth.

Outdoor learning: Next week we will be combining the art of Andy Goldsworthy with the theme of Remembrance as we create colourful sculptures using fallen autumn leaves.

Art: we will be pushing ahead with Suffragette posters this half term and incorporating the skill of printing with our own poster designs.

PE: we were forced inside this week by the weather but have started work on our half term focus of netball which the children have enjoyed. They put a lot of effort into their team games this week.

Science: we are looking forward to starting our new unit of work next week which looks at light and how it works enabling us to see things.

Global: the class did a super job of picking up on their work about SDG 13 Climate Action, which they started before half term. One more session should see the children's non-chronological reports completed. they have enjoyed the opportunity to organise their own research and presentation.
