Year 5 WC 8th November 2021

Date: 11th Nov 2021 @ 8:03pm

Year 5 have been working incredibly hard since we returned last week. In English we have started studying our text, The Errand, which has certainly sparked their imagination! The last two weeks the children have been immersed in the illustrations and story setting, making predictions and exploring lots of new vocabulary. They have then written some excellent setting descriptions using figurative language. We continued this work on similes and personification when writing a class poem for our Remembrance Service today.

In Maths we have been focusing on statistics: reading tables and interpreting line graphs. Next we are moving onto our multiplication and division unit so it is vital that children are continuing to practise their times tables. This will be ever so helpful when we begin working on factors, prime numbers, squared and cubed numbers.

On Tuesday we completed our Design and Technology unit designing and making a freedom quilt tile. The children showed great determination, teamwork and resilience as they used their running stitch and blanket stitch to sew their designs. Photos to follow!

In PSHE this half term our unit is called 'Don't forget to let love in' which is about the children being able to talk positively about themselves, accept positive things that others say and recognise their own value and worth. Over the next few weeks this will include discussing scenarios where they might feel under pressure within friendship groups and together coming up with positive strategies they can use to overcome them, and ensuring that children know they have people they can go to for support.

In Art, Mrs Taylor has been working with the class to create some wonderful watercolour artwork depicting their favourite Psalms. The children very much enjoyed seeing their work displayed in St Oswalds church today when we visited for our Remembrance Service.

Next week is Anti-bullying Week and the theme this year is 'One Kind Word'. We'll be encouraging the children to something kind for others and also for themselves each day.
