Year 5 6/5/19

Date: 11th May 2019 @ 8:44pm

Year 5 have worked incredibly hard this week and it has been lovely to see the huge progress they are making.

We have started each morning with a few arithmetic questions to solve and I can already see a huge improvement in children’s accuracy and confidence. Please continue to practise times tables at home. Little and often really is the best way to remember them. We have also been working on decimals and the children have been able to apply their fractions knowledge well to understand tenths, hundredths and thousandths.

In English we have been studying the figurative language in our text ‘The Promise’. The ideas children generated for their own writing were wonderful and we used them to write list poems which we shared with Year 6.

In topic we looked at sporting heroes examining whether sports stars really could be heroes. We watched the captivating video of Hayley Carruthers crawling across the finishing line of the London Marathon before researching a variety of other athletes and deciding whether they had any heroic qualities.

Next week we will be continuing our work on decimals, writing settings and descriptions and looking at the work of men and women working in our emergency services and deciding whether we think they are heroes.
