Year 4 blog w/b 2nd November

Date: 5th Nov 2020 @ 4:59pm

I hope you have had a lovely half term and are keeping safe and well in these very strange times. We have had a fantastic and very active first week back in Year 4. Many thanks for your continued support with reading, times table practice and homework.

Maths

We started the week with some very tricky Roman numerals! After this, our focus has been on adding and taking away thousands, comparing and ordering 4 digit numbers.

English

The children came back after break on Monday to find envelopes scattered around the classroom and some other strange items such as dresses (we surmised they might belong to Snow White and Sleeping Beauty), a red cape and some golden coins. In the envelopes, we found happy endings to different stories. After reading and comparing them we discovered they were endings to traditional tales. This week we have been using expanded nouns to describe events from the book, been making predictions and describing characters using poems. We have also been using dictionaries to find out new vocabulary from the text and assessing the effect on the reader with phrases from the book. Over the coming weeks, we will be using our ‘Lost Happy Endings’ book to write a twisted narrative fairy tale which doesn’t have a happy ending!

Guided Reading

We have been answering VIPERS questions about our new focus text The Secret of Platform 13! Our focus this week has been vocabulary and retrieving information. The children have been thrilled to have their own copies and have enjoyed using them in guided reading. Many thanks for your support in purchasing these.

Spelling

We have been focusing on words that either end in ation or contain ation. E.g. explanation, station.

RE

Our focus has been on the Christian community. Our focus has been on what makes us belong to Brereton and St Oswald’s. We have also looked at the activities some members of the church do and why, assessing which of our school values they show.

Topic and other subjects

We have been learning about rich and poor people in Tudor times. We then wrote a diary using the new information we found out. In outdoor learning, we looked at maps of our school and used these to find different points on the map. Year 4 are now learning about the digestive system in Science with Mr Cotton. In PE, we are now having sessions with Mr Rea and Mrs Walker from Multiflex. They taught a fantastic football session with a dribbling focus.
