Year 3 WC 30th April

Date: 28th Apr 2018 @ 7:50pm

Firstly I would like to say thank you for the hard work that the children have put into their writing homework this week. We've had a very positive response from the children who say they have really enjoyed being able to write their own stories.

In English we have been looking at openings and ending of stories, and how other authors do this effectively. We created a toolkit and then used this to write our own innovations. This week, the children will be writing their own wishing tale applying everything they have learnt.

In maths we have been completing our unit on fractions. They were fantastic at comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting fractions. We've been doing lots of reasoning and problem solving, such as spotting mistakes and explaining them. Next, we'll be moving onto time. In Year 3, children need to:

- tell the time to one minute using an analogue and digital clock.

- tell the time using the 24 hour clock.

- understand the relationship between seconds, minutes and hours and use this to record and compare times.

- understand vocbulary such as o'clock, am/pm, morning, afternoon, noon and midnight.

- know the number of seconds in a minute, and the number of days in each month, year and leap year.

As you can see, there is a lot to learn! It would be really helpful to contiue practising telling the time at home and use the language of time such as am/pm. Additionally, drop questions into everyday life, e.g. We have dancing at 5pm. It takes 30 minutes to get there so what time will we have to leave? The show starts at 15:15, how long do we have to wait? Your lesson starts at 12:15 and finshes at 1:30, how long is your lesson.

In Science we are going to be starting our next unit on plants. Over the next few weeks, we'll be looking at the different parts of the plants and their functions.

I will be on an Emotionally Healthy Schools course on Wednesday. The children will have supply in the morning and Mr Jones as usual on Wednesday afternoon. Don't forget that swimming money is now paid online using Parent Pay.
