Year 3 blog w.b. 8th November

Date: 14th Nov 2021 @ 8:34pm

We have had a fantastic couple of weeks in Year 3 with our new history topic about the industrial revolution! Homework has commenced last week and will be set every Monday. PE and forest school sessions will be on Friday this half term. You have also received an email about our school trip on Tuesday 30th November to the National Waterways Museum, where we will be finding out more about the industrial revolution and canals. After visiting with my family in the half term, I hope the children will have a wonderful and memorable trip.

Maths

Over the past two weeks, we have finished our addition and subtraction unit of work. Our focus has been on column addition and subtraction, problem solving and reasoning. Next week, we will start to focus on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Any work at home (on TT Rockstars- Jammin’ mode is great!) would be useful to support your child’s understanding.

English

The children have enjoyed listening to our new focus text, Jemmy Button. We have been writing several short burst pieces of writing and analysing a model text. Over the next week or two we will be writing a return story using the focus text.

We have also started reading Ice Palace in guided reading, focusing on inference, prediction and explanation skills in our focus questions.

Other areas of the curriculum

This week in Science, we learned about sources of light. We then looked things that people might think are sources of light, but aren’t (such as the moon!), as well as what darkness is. Next week, we will start to experiment with torches when we look at which surfaces and materials are more reflective.

In Forest School, we enjoyed making canal boats using string and sticks- we will be finishing these next week. In RE, we have been learning about Communion in church and the story of the Last Supper.

In History, we have learned what the industrial revolution was and the major changes that happened during that period of history. After this, we then looked at children who worked during that time and the working conditions that they had. The children particularly found this session fascinating. In DT with Mrs T this week, the children started our new unit about pneumatic toys! They will be designing and making one over the coming weeks. In PE, we have started our netball unit- our focus has been on passing and defending over the past two weeks.

On Thursday, the children were very respectful at our Remembrance Service at St Oswalds with the rest of Key Stage 2.
