Year 2 WC 6th January 2020

Date: 12th Jan 2020 @ 9:06pm

Welcome back. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year.

We've only been back in school for four days but we are certainly back into the swing of things in Year 2. In maths we are completing our money unit before returning to multiplication and division. We have been working on counting notes and coins, using coins to make a total and solving money problems. You can help at home by giving your child real money to count (both coins and notes) and find real opportunities when they can handle money, work out how much something is going to cost and finding change. This is a good website to practise at home and it is also tablet friendly.

In English we have been introduced to our text, 'A River'. We have been using drama to explore the story imagining that we are experiencing the different settings that the river travels though. The children have also started using similes to describe the river. Some of the examples we had were 'the river was winding like a snake', 'a river like an elephants trunk', 'vines thick as rope' and 'clouds soft as cotton candy'.

In topic we started by showing the children a jug of water and they discussed where the water came from. This led us to look at the United Utilities website to find the source of our water, the River Dee. We found the River Dee on the map and then learnt that all rivers lead to the sea.

In Science we began looking at what a habitat is and explored some habitats around the world. We discussed the conditions and why they are suitable for the animals that live there.

In Spanish the children are now really confident with numbers to 10, some simple greetings and colours. Each week, Mrs Bond comments on how well the children are picking up the vocabulary and they are so enthusiastic singing the songs.
