Year 2 WC 20th January 2020

Date: 26th Jan 2020 @ 6:08pm

This week in maths we have begun our division unit. We have been grouping and sharing equal amounts, looking at odd and even numbers and have moved onto diving by two and five. To assist with division we have applied our knowledge of the two and five times – tables, which helps makes links between division and multiplication facts.

In English, the children began planning and writing their own circular stories, using a story map based on our text A River to assist with language features and structure e.g. the use of noun phrases, similes and repeated phrases. Together we did a shared write, encouraging creative ideas from the children that we could include in our version of a circular story. We also began to look at editing and evaluating our own writing, encouraging the children to re-read sentences, check spelling and thinking of ways they can make their writing even better!

In topic, we introduced one of the Sustainable Development goal that our class is focusing on; SDG6 ‘clean water and sanitation’. First we discussed the importance of clean water in our daily lives by asking what we use clean water for at home and school e.g drinking, showering, washing plates etc. Then we looked at a case study of an 8 year old girl Naranisoa from Madagascar who has to walk for miles three times a day to collect dirty water from the closest river to her village for her family to drink and wash in. Next in our kagan groups we went outside to carry buckets full of water around the playground to help us gain a bit of an understanding of how Naranisoa feels as she walks for miles collecting drinking water for her family. This sparked a great discussion! “It would be dangerous for her to walk all that way on her own”, “Why doesn’t she have any clean water?”, “I would still be grateful that I have water to drink”.

In computing, the children looked at giving orders correctly to make something happen. They did this through programming a Bee-Bot in kagan groups. In their groups they drew a shape on flipchart paper then programmed the Bee-Bot to move along the line, if the Bee-Bot went off course they were encouraged to debug (removing of existing and potential errors). They drew the algorithm that they used to program their Bee-Bot. The children were engouraged to use new language such as algorithm, execute, program and debug.

I hope you've had a great weekend and we are looking forward to another busy week in Year 2.
