Year 2 WC 13th January 2020

Date: 19th Jan 2020 @ 8:58pm

This week we have completed our unit on money in maths. The children have been problem solving, finding totals and change. Therefore it has been a good recap of our addition and subtraction strategies. We are now moving on to division where they will be making equal groups and sharing.

In English we have continued to explore our text, A River. The children should now be familiar with what a noun phrase is (it's when you have a adjective and a noun, e.g. the adventurous boy, an enormous river). We've also been building on what we learnt about conjunctions (joining words, e.g. when, because, but, so, while, if)  in year 1, using a wider variety and even putting them at the beginning of a sentence. We applied everything we have been learning to describe settings. Next week we are going to start planning our own stories.

In topic, after looking at the features of a river, we looked more closely at the River Dee in Chester. We recapped our previous learning about physical and human features in the environment, and used this to write a recount of a journey along the River Dee, describing what we saw. This also gave us further opportunities to put what we had been learning in English, into practice.

In computing, the children looked at the importance of giving instructions in the correct order with enough detail. They started by watching a video of someone being programmed to made a sandwich. They found it very funny when they saw the mistakes that happened when the instructions weren't clear enough. The children then had to program their human-bot to walk around the playground in a particular order. They learnt lots of new language including algorithm, execute, program and debug.

On Tuesday, we had Multiflex coaches come in to do some PE with us. They taught us some great team games that challenged the children to work as a team and use their tactics to get the most points.

In Spanish, every week we start by recapping numbers, greetings and colours so that we are consolidating all that vocabulary. This week we were then introduced to animals.
