Year 2 w/b 9th May

Date: 13th May 2022 @ 4:39pm

Year Two have worked incredibly hard this week. It has been a pleasure to read their recounts of our trip to Nantwich. It is always interesting to discover what each child considered to be a highlight of the day! We focused on including the features of a recount that we had identified last week. On Friday, we began to publish our writing, focusing particularly on making our capital letters, ascenders and descenders clear.

Our spelling focus this week was: adding the suffix ‘es’ to words ending in y. We realised that, once again, we needed to swap the y for an i before adding the suffix (e.g. ladies, copies, carries). We have been recapping lots of our red words this week.

On Monday, we looked at quarter past and quarter to times in maths. We will revisit time after the half term. For the rest of the week, we have recapped and refreshed our knowledge of the four operations and fractions. Year Two proved to be experts at applying their arithmetic strategies!

In DT, we were designing our own moving monsters! After learning about levers and linkages, we revisited our design criteria and added two of our own. We then created two designs before asking our friends to vote for their favourite and evaluating how well they met the design criteria. This helped us to pick our design. We can’t wait to begin the ‘make’ stage!

In RE, we enjoyed an afternoon focusing on infant baptism. After learning about what happens in infant baptism, we were able to act out a service. It was interesting to discuss the stages of the service and why they were significant. We thought particularly about the role of parents and godparents and the promises that they make. There was also time to share our own experiences of baptism. It was fascinating to look at a selection of gowns, blankets, candles, Bibles, certificates and photographs from our baptisms.

Due to Wednesday’s wet weather, our PE lesson took place inside the classroom! This didn’t stop us from having lots of fun as we continued to refine our throwing and catching skills.

As some children did not have their wellies, our Forest School session took place on the playground. We hunted for a variety of minibeasts to enrich our science learning. This was built upon by Mr Cotton in Friday’s science lesson as the children recorded the minibeasts that they had found in the form of a tally chart. It was wonderful to see the children applying their mathematical statistics skills within context. Please ensure that children bring their wellies so that they can take part in the Forest School session even in the damp weather.

On Friday, we were also excited to begin our first Spanish lesson! We can’t wait to learn some more Spanish over the next few weeks in preparation for Key Stage 2.

Year Two you have worked very hard as ever. Enjoy a restful weekend and I shall look forward to seeing you on Monday.
