Year 1 w/b 10th May

Date: 14th May 2021 @ 4:18pm

This week in English has been our ‘Invention’ week. We looked at other return stories inspired by the Secret of Black Rock. We highlighted the opening, build up, problem and ending before we planned our own return adventure. The class has the confidence and imagination to generate lots of their own ideas about characters that travelled to places they had been warned about, encountered a problem but were saved and brought back home. It has been great to see the children’s independent application of similes, story language, repeated phrases and punctuation.

In maths we have completed Power Maths book 1b having solved word problems involving mass and capacity. We have now started our new unit in our new book on multiplication. In this unit, children will develop their understanding of multiplication as repeated addition, understanding the difference between equal and not equal groups. They will use their knowledge of skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and will use concrete, pictorial and abstract representations to help them to find the total of multiple equal groups and of doubles.

In Science We are continuing to group animals in a range of ways. This week we were looking at grouping animals into the following two categories: vertebrates and invertebrates. Because we already know about grouping fish, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, we realised that animals in these five groups are vertebrates and have a backbone. We often call animals in the invertebrate group ‘minibeasts’ but when we looked at sea creatures including jelly fish, we realised that using the scientific word ‘invertebrates’ was better. We know that invertebrates often have either a hard-outer shell like a crab or beetle, but they can also be jelly like and wriggly like jellyfish and worms. It would be great if you could talk about animals at home and consider which group they would fit into - vertebrates or invertebrates.

In DT after creating our design plans and experimenting with construction methods last week, we are now beginning to make the playground equipment for our final designs. We are working with partners or in small groups, so teamwork is also something we are working on; how to work together or share out jobs to complete individually. We can’t wait to show you our finished playground designs in a few weeks.

This week we have been listening to a piece of jazz music from the famous jazz performer Louis Armstrong. We listened to him perform the song ‘What A Wonderful World’ and enjoyed the smooth change of pace. There was less toe tapping and more swaying this week when we listened to this song!

In RE we explored the changes experienced by the disciples once they had received the gift of the Holy spirit. We acted out all the changes we could spot having read from the Bible and watched an animation of what happened in the weeks and months following Pentecost. Filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit the disciples seemed to have a new confidence and joyfully talked about Jesus, his life, death and resurrection. They encouraged people to become baptised and start a new life with Jesus at the heart of it. They shared meals and fellowship with people of all faiths and none. They shared their money, food and clothing with those people who had very little and even healed the sick. This was the start of Christianity and the early Christian Church.

In Collective worship we have continued to focus on the parables of Jesus and on Monday we read and discussed the parable of the Lost Sheep. We recognised that for Christians God is like the shepherd who keeps searching until he finds people who are lost or have forgotten him. God is overjoyed when finds the lost or those that wander away from him and they return to the Kingdom of God. We wrote prayers of thanks to God for constantly searching and caring for us. This week marks the start of Christian Aid week so we explored the work of this charity in Kenya where dams have been built in some villages to ensure many people have water more easily accessible.

In forest school this week we revisited some of our science learning from the Autumn term and looked at the trees in our outside area. We recapped what we mean when we group trees into the following categories: deciduous and evergreen. We then used leaf and blossom identification sheets to identify trees in our local area. Mr Simmons told us so many interesting facts as we went around.

Harry from Cheshire cricket has been pleased with the children’s improved throwing, catching and bowling skills. Today we played non-stop cricket which allowed everyone to be involved in fielding and batting in different teams. Please see the photos attached.

Have a lovely weekend and as ever if you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to ask via email, Showbie or through a note in reading diaries.
