Year 1 WC 7th January 2019

Date: 13th Jan 2019 @ 10:18pm

Happy new year! I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas.

This term our topic is 'Earth' so we shall be looking at our local area over the next few weeks. After half term, we'll look further afield as we'll study St Lwanga, where our Kenyan link school is located. We'll make comparisons between the two places, identifying similarities and differences. This week we started by learning what human and physical features are. Then we explored our school grounds looking for different examples of each.

In English we are studying Jim and the Beanstalk. In our hook lesson, the children came in from playtime to discover a large note addressed to Jim from the giant, thanking him for the glasses, wig and teeth. I'm sure if you ask your child why the giant was saying thank you for these things they'll enjoy telling you all about it! In our writing, we have focused on using interesting adjectives and conjunctions (and, but, so, because) to extend our sentences.

In maths we have started using our new approach, Power Maths. We will be holding maths workshops later in the term to tell you more about this. More details will follow soon.

In science our topic is animals. We have started by learning about different pets, finding out about the different types of pets and how to look after them. Mr Mottershead brought in his tortoise, Mary, for us to look at. We were very surprised at how fast she was!

In PSHE we have been discussing 'what makes us special?'. We learnt what the word 'unique' means and thought about what makes each of us special and unique. We want to encourage the children to celebrate each others differences and remind each other why we are special. So this week we're going to be trying extra hard to compliment each other and say thank you when someone has shown kindness.
