Year 1 WC 4th June 2019

Date: 8th Jun 2019 @ 8:45pm

This half term our learning will be based around the text, Hermelin. Hermelin is a detective mouse who spends his days anonymously helping out the residents of Offley Street. In English this week we enjoyed getting to know the story, generating questions to ask Hermelin and exploring new vocabulary.

In phonics we have been preparing for the phonics screening which will take place next week. Therefore we have been revising all the sounds we have learnt so far, reading real words and alien words.

In maths we have continued with fractions finding halves and quarters. The children have been brilliant at splitting shapes into halves and quarters but have found sharing objects into quarters more of a challenge. To help at home, you can talk about halves and quarters in different contexts, e.g. splitting pizza, cake etc into halves and quarters,  talking about how many parts there are and whether they are equal. Additionally, any opportunity to split objects (pepperoni on a pizza, snacks, toys, etc) into halves and quarters would also be beneficial. The maths homework I sent home on Friday this week is instead of My Maths on Monday.

On Tuesday we had a whole school RE day, focusing on Pentecost. In year 1 we looked at the story of the Holy Spirit and explored the question 'How did the Holy Spirit change the disciples?'.

On Wednesday we are being visited by Act it Out. They are a local performing arts company who visit schools to deliver specialist workshops on a range of themes and topics. They will be spending half a day each with Year 1 and 2 for a mental health and wellbeing workshop which has very kindly been paid for my our PTA.
